How to extend Car windshield wipers Its lifespan? If you’re driving in summer—especially if your car has been parked in the sun for a long time—remember to move the windshield wipers up and down before you start driving. Why is that? Let’s find out together below!

One reason is that in summer, when temperatures are high, the rubber strip of the windshield wiper can stick to the glass. If we ignore this and simply start using the car’s wipers right away, the sticky strip could suddenly tear off during operation because it’s already adhered to the glass.

Another reason is that when a car is parked for a long time, the windshield wipers can accumulate a lot of sand and other impurities. When you use the car’s windshield wipers, the sand might break the rubber strips on the wipers and cause permanent damage to the wiper blades themselves. That’s why everyone should replace their wiper blades.

What are the types of car windshield wipers?

Car windshield wipers come in two main types: with a frame and frameless. We can usually tell the difference between them at a glance. A framed wiper consists of a clip, a blade holder, a steel strip, and a rubber blade. Typically, the blade holder has six to eight support points. During operation, a framed wiper relies primarily on these points for support. As the name suggests, a framed wiper is as rigid as bone.

In addition, boneless wiper blades typically consist of a clip, a deflector plate, an edge guard cover, a rubber strip, and a steel blade. The entire blade of a boneless wiper is pressed tightly against the glass, providing superior support and making it distinctly different from conventional wipers. The material feels incredibly soft—almost as if it has no bones at all—hence the name "boneless."

The design of bone-in wiper blades looks relatively complex, and most of these wiper blades are made of iron, making them heavier. In contrast, boneless wiper blades are much simpler, lighter, and more flexible. What exactly is the difference between the two?

As is well known, boneless wipers are lighter than traditional wipers—indeed, they’re at least half as light or even lighter. Thanks to their steel-strip design, boneless wipers exert more uniform pressure on the car’s windshield, resulting in higher efficiency. After passing over the glass, they leave a cleaner finish and offer significant advantages when driving at high speeds, as they are resistant to wind and effectively reduce noise.

Here’s a little-known fact: When car windshield wipers are in operation, they don’t actually wipe away the rainwater from the glass. Instead, they spread the water across the glass surface like flipping a pancake, creating a relatively even film. This allows drivers to see clearly while driving. The more evenly the wiper spreads the water, the smoother the film becomes—and the clearer your view will be.

However, there are three-tier wiper blades available on the market, and many people aren't aware of what they are. In fact, these automotive wiper blades are simply three-layer hard-shell plastics wrapped around the wiper itself—though they come in both bone-type and boneless varieties. So before buying wiper blades, be sure to ask the manufacturer clearly, or even take them apart yourself to take a closer look. Don't let the appearance fool you.

If you need to buy car wipers, simply put, you can opt for boneless wipers with a Teflon coating and internal high-carbon steel. These wipers tend to be more durable and offer better value for money.

Common Wiper Problems

Strip-shaped streaks: The optimal support point for the wiper blade was not found, resulting in the wiper blade failing to make full contact with the glass at every point. Improper arm pressure, damage to the upper structure, or even an improperly fitted wiper blade can all cause this phenomenon.
